Collections from each of these will all form part of the Great North Museum project, due to open in 2009. The Hancock Museum (closed during development of the project) is to be the site of the ground-breaking £26m development!

  • The Laing Art Gallery has an extensive collection of paintings, water-colours, costume, silver, glass, pottery and sculpture, and has a series of exhibitions each year.
  • BALTIC (the Centre for Contemporary Art) transformed a disused grain warehouse in Gateshead into one of the biggest temporary art spaces in Europe.
  • The Biscuit Factory is a must for art lovers. It includes art space and artist's studios - much of the artwork is available for purchase.

There are specialist galleries in and around Newcastle, including the Cluny, the SIDE Photographic Gallery and Newcastle Arts Centre. Art isn't confined to the galleries in Newcastle, public art such as the Blue Carpet is all over the city.
